3 Back-To-School PR Parenting Tips

August 1, 2023

How goes the summer? I hope you and your family are having a great one!!

I’ve been busy spreading the word about the PR Parenting Movement in multiple media interviews and beginning my new career as an author/speaker/coach.

I’ve also been enjoying having all three of my kids at home, probably for the very last time for a while, as all three are about to begin their next stage in life – mandatory military service, 2nd year in med school and a career in high tech, respectively. It’s both thrilling and highly emotional, at least for this mama.

How about you? What kind of new beginnings are you and your family about to encounter? New school year or a totally new school or university for the kids? New job for you? New anything for anyone in the family?

It’s all exciting and unnerving at the same time, right?  Exciting, as we know the future has great potential. Unnerving, as most changes also come with some fear of the unknown.

How do we prepare and inspire our kids and ourselves to proceed with confidence?

Let’s look at this through a public relations (PR) lens and use PR media and presentation training practices to help make our new beginnings as smooth as possible.

Here are three activities to consider:

•    Define the who, what, where, when, why, and hows of the upcoming change.

•    Anticipate likely scenarios, plan what to do/say or not to do/say in each case, and then practice if applicable.

•    Think of a few unlikely scenarios and devise a game plan for the unexpected that would cover what to do/say or not to do/say in such scenarios.

Though certainly a serious brainstorming exercise, it can also be a really fun one. Remember to document your answers so you and your child can refer to them later. You may also want to do a walk-through of the location of the new beginning and photograph or record your visit to view, whenever you want, to put your mind and that of your child’s at ease and to build excitement.

The more you think through the likely AND the highly unlikely with your kids and yourself, the easier it will be for you and your kids to exhale, take those next steps with confidence, and enjoy.

Preparing for the expected and the unexpected is an exercise I’ve regularly practiced professionally for the last 30 years as a global public relations executive and for the last 26 as a working mom. It is addressed in detail in The Power of PR Parenting.
